The New Law and Your Responsibilities
On the 1st October 2006 the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order (RRFSO) came into effect, this change in the law affects a variety of people. If you are one of the following then you will need to act:
- responsible for business premises
- an employer
- self-employed with business premises
- a charity or voluntary organisation
- a contractor with a degree of control over any premises
The RRO now supersedes all previously issued fire certificates.
The fire service will no longer issue fire certificates; however, they will continue to carry out ad hoc inspections. It is now the role of the employer to undertake a fire risk assessment for his premises and act on those findings.
The penalties for non-compliance are unlimited fines and, in extreme cases, a custodial sentence.
